When speaking, Maria has a flat Midwestern accent. She tends not to waste words, and is grudging of the time it takes to explain something when it could simply be being done. She is fluent in German, Russian, Arabic and French as well as literate Anglo-Saxon, Welsh and Latin. The latter three she learned for fun to read older manuscripts in their original forms.

Maria had had a rather bad fear of heights, which she covered rather well while on the giant flying aircraft carrier. She eventually got over it through constant exposure, and now she seems to rather enjoy it. Maria is usually interested in planning out her actions, but when spontaneous, her obvious joy and the very rareness of the event are infectious.

Maria is enamored of all things educational, especially books. She loves mysteries, classics except for the Victorian romances for which she has no patience, histories and all manner of the in-between. For more modern reading she prefers Asimov and other sci-fi and fantasy writers. She refuses to touch the Twilight series or any trashy romance novels.

Maria is a born leader, though she is fine with Nick Fury being her boss. She used to begrudge it of him, but has since learned to understand his methods even if she doesn’t approve. She has no further ambitions, as she is content where she is in life. Director Fury she understands and respects, if she can not like or condone all his actions. She knows that being promoted any further would put her beyond her capabilities, and has no illusions or regrets about it. She is still young, and knows she has years ahead of her to grow into the person SHIELD will need her to be. She will do what she must to maintain freedom on Earth, though she prefers to remain inside the rulebook where Fury enjoys dancing on the spine of it. When viewed by others, she seems cold and calculating, as well as snobbish and aloof. Most people consider her to be a bit of a badass, and Director Fury knows she has a sense of humor and a bit of a bent towards insubordination which she keeps in check by sheer willpower. She sees herself as more isolated and lonely than anyone realizes, though she agrees that she is a bit of a badass.
